Programme Note

Pieces of a Funeral began as an exercise in writing a piece for a beginner piano player. I wanted to create easy pieces, compositional etudes as it were, that helped both performer and composer learn. Each movement is based on a track from Arcade Fire’s 'debut albume, Funeral, but not in any way evidential.

These miniatures vary from very easy, to quite complex rhythmic paterns, an most of all, helped me realise a lot about my own style and voice.

Movement VI was commissioned by Thalia Myers for the Spectrum piano series. The set is an ongoing project.
